Train inspection
For every train, certain actions have to be taken at departure and arrival stations, and at border stations: in Switzerland such actions are termed train handling services. These include all the tasks connected with preparing the train, i.e. technical inspection of the wagons, checking the brakes, recording train data and also shunting operations. Train handling services may also be required at stations en route, for example if the onboard monitoring mechanisms have been triggered and the train needs to be checked by an inspector.
BLS Cargo uses both its own and contracted staff for train handling services. It has its own staff in Weil am Rhein (BLS Cargo Deutschland), Domodossola (BLS Cargo Italia) and Chiasso. BLS Cargo also offers its services to other companies in these locations, so, for example, the services of an inspector between Domodossola and Berne can be obtained from BLS Cargo.
In addition, a new Competence Centre for Rolling Stock Technology and Safety now operates in Berne. It assumes the responsibility for compliance with train composition and loading regulations, as well as with the special requirements for the transport of hazardous goods.
